My birthday was last weekend and I had an amazing time wearing fabulous dresses from Rent The Runway! I wanted to get all dressed up without pouncing on unsuspecting racks of clothing like a wild beast searching for its next meal. Last year I planned a celebration and by the time I shopped for my outfit I was exhausted and cranky. I’m surprised I wasn’t found rocking back and forth in a corner, twirling my hair and wearing a onesie! This year I vowed no event planning and I left my outfit worries to Rent The Runway, who I shall dub my personal fashion assistant. Honestly, I’m just not the type to spend $200+ on a dress I’m going to wear once. By the way, you can get a $20 credit for Rent The Runway when you create a free account. 😉
I got two dresses, perfect since my birthday fell on Saturday and I decided to celebrate the whole weekend. They have dresses starting at $30 from sizes 0-22 and accessories like jewelery and handbags starting at $5. On Friday I wore the Nicole Miller Jaw Dropper Dress which retails for $245 but is $50 via Rent The Runway. Its a gorgeous purple dress, shaped like a pencil skirt, has a square neckline and open back! I got it in a size small and a second in size medium, a free feature they provide to help ensure your dress fits. I ended up wearing the small. I felt gorgeous and I loved that I still looked classy in this body hugging dress.
I styled it with champagne colored New York Transit heels from The Shoe Department, Satin Finish Kite Earring and Studded Buckle Wristlet from Cato Fashions and my Fossil Georgia Three-Hand Bangle watch. I spent the evening in downtown Orlando at Elixir and Wall St with friends chatting, laughing, eating birthday cupcakes and dancing the night away!
Next up my official birthday dress, the Halston Heritage Confetti Dot Dress, retail price $595 and rental price of $85 via Rent The Runway. This dress just screams celebration to me! It was so comfortable and perfect for a dinner party, birthday party…anything party! Two things I love are polka dots and full skirts, this dress has both! It’s strapless with a ruched top, a hidden zipper and friggin pockets! Pockets = love!
I styled it with a chains & pearls necklace I made years ago, some pearl earrings, my Rakani Stuck In Traffic Watch and comfy black flats from Payless for 5 bucks!. I got this silk dress in a size 4 and I was honestly a bit worried if my boobays would fit because this petite gal is actually a D cup. Yes, I’m 33 and I say boobays. 😉 It actually sort of minimized my upper area and I liked that. The dress fit perfectly, it’s fashion magic I tell you!
If you’ve never heard of or used Rent The Runway, here’s a a bit about how it works. The site lets you enter your sizes so you can optionally find photos of dresses worn by others with your body type. You can also search by designer, occasion, color, price and dress type. Users leave mini reviews about the garments, usually including photos, so you can hear the positive and/or negative info from other customers. It’s helpful to know ahead of time if most people find that a dress runs small or rises with movement. Rent The Runway even suggests what type of undergarments to wear and ways to style it with accessories. Once you find the dress you want select your size and your optional free backup size, then enter the arrival date you need.
You can get a 4 or 8 day rental and Rent The Runway suggests you request an arrival 1-2 days before your event. Your dress will come on hangers, in protective covering and inside a Rent The Runway garment bag. This is all neatly tucked in a shipping box which includes a prepaid return envelope. When it’s time to return your rental items simply place in the protective covering and then into the prepaid envelope, then schedule a pickup or drop off at your local UPS location or drop box. The nifty garment bag and hangers are yours to keep! Yes, I got excited about that. It was an extremely simple process for me. Stress free, fabulous 33rd birthday weekend just like I hoped for!
Conclusion: As someone who loves designer fashion but loathes designer prices, this is a great option for special occasions or just to dress up for a night out. Rent The Runway is to me what tux rentals are for men, uber smart! I’m over buying dresses to wear once and sit in my closet until the end of time wasting space. If it’s not my prom or wedding dress, it can go! I will definitely use Rent The Runway again, probably when I go to New York in May!
